The Arizona State University Art Museum will tour a mid-career retrospective that surveys fifteen years of painting and multi-media by Lawrence Gipe. The theme unifying the exhibition is the exploration of the
relationship of the artist to political forces.

1990-1995:
The first section addresses the visual language of industrialization and the Cult of Progress and technology in Europe, the Soviet Union and the United States between the World Wars.

1995-2000:
The works more explicitly unmask the rhetoric of propaganda during the Nazi era, and the role of collusion of the artists who were supported by the Third Reich. The work explores the photographic output of German photographers who created seductive images made possible by German optics.

2000-2005:
The works from this period actually use technology that is new now. Digital manipulation of the images used in the earlier work allow the artist to create a digital “ground” of collaged images derived from the body of photographs explored earlier. The propaganda images are transformed by the juxtapositions and scale shifts that create new terrain and impossible activities.

Lawrence Gipe was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962, received a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1984 and MFA from Otis/Parsons Institute of Design, Los Angeles, in 1986. He has shown primarily in Germany, New York, and Los Angeles, most recently at Joseph Helman Gallery, New York, in May 2003.
