My work is a continuous dialogue with color, especially the quality of color that is unique to ceramic materials. The works themselves have evolved from visual ideas I pursued as a painter earlier in my career.  Over the years, their conception has become more architectural, relying on the interplay of actual and illusory depth with the rich nuances of light, shadow and transparency.

This new series is inspired by the robust sky of the Southwest in contrast to the parched clay soils. On my new work, an interaction of play between two- and three-dimension occurs, with a two-dimensional silk screen decal image of a textured glaze next to the actual chunky glaze, representing the dry landscape.

The richness of newly developed high-temperature over glazes used for decals and painted on the surface, adds translucent layers of color over both slip and glaze. The complete spectrum of color is available at this one high temperature.  Vitreous slips may be applied on top of glazed areas, breaking up the surface producing texture and depth to the color. The pieces are fired many times to the same high temperature for the final effect.
