Observing, recording and interpreting physical details of nature generate the visual and metaphorical language in my work. The delicate threshold between opposing conditions and the effort to maintain balance is fundamental to the formal and conceptual views revealed in the image and materials. Visual and physical evidence related to the cycles of nature are quiet reminders of the passing of time and the urgency of the moment. Influenced by the drought in the southwest, my current work reflects on the impact of water, or lack of it, on our environment. Plots of lush, moist green grass exist on the edge of brittle, scorched vegetation on the verge of burning.
The “over-” series incorporates the use of compound words to identify and underscore the meaning and making of the work. Overhead, Overcast, Overlap, Overleaf, Overlay consider aspects of making the work that relates to position, movement, and excess, while reinforcing the compound way that I work - layering wool over wood, image over color, burning over printing, idea over design.
