My fascination with the historic reliquary form and presentation of venerated objects ties into issues I am exploring that deal with the importance of position, display and access (or limited access) to what is contained.
My intention is to elevate, and perhaps endear, the ordinary. These creations strive to heighten awareness of habitual performances, products and surroundings by using blatant glorification. The choice of display can draw attention to, place importance upon and affect the perception of the simplest of objects.
The items I choose to contain or display comment on past and present society, relationships and memories. By placing common objects that I hold precious in elaborate settings, I hope to provide an emotional and visual appeal that sparks a feeling of recognition, agreement or amusement in the viewer.
Cootie Wall Mount: Cherishing Childhood takes its inspiration from the tradition of taxidermy and that trophy buck that you always want to remember. How better to preserve something that was/is so valuable to you than to mount its head on your wall. This mount consists of the three remaining pieces of the Cootie game I played with growing up. The rest of the set has somehow vanished like many of the joys and memories of childhood. Quickly cling to what you have left and immortalize it. Hang on to the past by hanging it in that prize position on your wall, where you and others can gaze upon it in remembrance and contemplation.
