The main landscape image was created by importing real-world 3D satellite models downloaded from the US Geologic Service (USGS) server into a suite of commercially available computer applications. The terrain data was processed using the application 3DEM; the image of the fence was modeled using 3D Studio Max; and a scene-generating package called Terragen was used to create the landscape texture maps and atmospheric effects. Terragen allows the user to adjust algorithms—sets of rules—for effects such as cloud cover, water, vegetation and sun angles.  There were no photographs used in rendering of the landscape.

The upper map depicts the region just west of the border town of Nogales.  The red line on the map shows the extent of the fence as shown in the landscape.

The artist wishes to thank 3D visualization and modeling specialist, Don Vance, for his significant help in the creation of this image.
