You’re Joking! 2005-2006
You’re Joking!
is a series of vignettes in which the actor describes everyday racist incidences in different modes of address, edited together to reveal the processes of becoming and establishing new meanings into the narration thus calling into question notions of authenticity and hierarchies of victim-hood.

About the artist:
Rachel Garfield currently lives and works in London. In 2003 she graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, with a BFA. She received an MA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London, and went on to receive her PhD from the Royal College of Art, London. Garfield’s work has recently exhibited in solo touring exhibition: you’d think so, wouldn’t you?, Focal Point Gallery, Southend on Sea, England; artsdepot, London; University of Hertfordshire Galleries, Hatfield, England. Recent select group exhibitions include: Just World Order, Artsway, Hampshire, England; Book, University of Hertfordshire galleries, Hatfield, England; Visions, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Wolverhampton, England; In Their Own Words, End Gallery, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England; Culture Bound, 6th Bienniale at the Courtauld Institute, London; Sparkvideo, Spark Contemporary Art Space, Syracuse, New York; Unframed: the Practices and Politics of Women Painting, Standpoint gallery, London; faprojects, video invitational, London; Treason, Café Gallery, London. In 2005 the artist received an Arts Council award for national touring solo exhibition, 2006/2004/2000/1998 a NJL Foundation bursary award, and in 1995 received an Oppenheim-John Downes Memorial Award.
