Showcasing the diversity and outstanding talent of artists within the state of Arizona is the primary force behind the Arizona State University Art Museum's "Another Arizona: A State-Wide Juried Exhibition." The exhibition, featuring the work of 22 Arizona artists, will be held from February 28 through May 10, 1998. "We want to support the adventuresome work being produced in our own home state," says Marilyn A. Zeitlin, ASU Art Museum director and chief curator. "And we also want to inform a wide audience about the contemporary art coming from Arizona artists." Zeitlin is co-curator of "Another Arizona" with ASU Art Museum senior curator Heather Sealy Lineberry.
The 22 Arizona artists, who were selected from 356 submissions, are: Tarah Rider Berry, Phoenix; Timothy Chapman, Phoenix; Dan Collins, Tempe; Gene Cooper, Tempe; Hoge Day, Tucson; Megan DeArmond, Tucson; Dana Fritz and Larry Gawel, Tempe; Steve Gompf, Mesa; Marlyne Jones, Scottsdale; Timothy S. Kelly, Tempe; Annie Lopez, Phoenix; Beverly McIver, Phoenix; Sherrie Medina, Phoenix; Marie Navarre, Phoenix; Gayle Novak, New River; Al Price, Phoenix; Alfred J. Quiroz, Tucson; Barbara Rogers, Tucson; Christina Smith, Tempe; James Turrell, Flagstaff; Marcus Zilliox, Tempe; and Rhonda Zwillinger, Paulden.
Jurors for the selection process were Paul Schimmel, Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles; Enrique Chagoya, Artist, Curator and Professor of Art at Stanford University; Lineberry; and Zeitlin.
"Another Arizona" will be exhibited in two galleries in the ASU Art Museum's location in the Nelson Fine Arts Center and in the Experimental Gallery, a museum space in Matthews Center.
The original idea for "Another Arizona"
was developed from a series of meetings held during the past two years
between local artists and the ASU Art Museum curators. "The museum
staff called the meetings to determine how we can better serve and promote
Arizona artists, and help foster a greater sense of community among artists
and institutions," explains Lineberry. " The artists proposed
a large juried exhibition that would draw a broader pool than recent curated
projects -- hence the title of the exhibition."
A reception, with performance works by exhibiting
artists, will take place February 28, 1998 from 7 - 9 p.m. and will be
free to the public.
