Annual Short Film and Video Festival

Film Festival Success Stories:

MATTHEW EHLERS &ndash Matthew Ehlers first presented his work The Alibi as part of our festival in 2000, and then screened a second work, Who's Your Daddy at the 2005 festival. In November 2005, Animungus, a weekly series created and written by Matthew Ehlers, premiered on the Cartoon Network.

CHRIS SHERIDAN &ndash Chris Sheridan originally screened Walk This Way as a work in progress at the ASU Art Museum in 1996, while he was a student at ASU. He went on to receive the Student Academy Award in 1997, presented to him by actor Ed Harris. The final version of the work screened at our festival in 1998, the first open jury year of the festival. Sheridan is now an actor, writer and producer on the Family Guy.

MATT MARELLO &ndash Marello's work originally screened at our second annual festival in 1998. In 2004 he was a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship award winner.

RYAN McCULLOCH &ndash We became the very first festival ever to screen any of the work of Ryan McCulloch when, as a 14-year-old high school student, he entered our festival in 1998. His work Without You went on to win: Best Animation, Saguaro Film Festival; Audience Favorite, Palm Springs International Film Festival; Honorable Mention-Animation, Savannah Film & Video Festival; Best of Show, Utah Student Film Collective Festival; Silver Medal Award - Winning Student Short, WorldFest Flagstaff; and was screened at the opening night gala of the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. HBO bought the rights to present Without You two times a month for the following two years and created a mini-documentary on the young artist and the making of Without You.

SUZY MEIER &ndash After presenting her work Confessions at Military Camp at our festival in 2000, Meier later received the prestigious Princess Grace Award for the same piece.

DON HERTZFELDT &ndash Screening his work Billy's Balloon in our 2000 short film and video festival, he became a 2001 Academy Award® Nominee, "Best Animated Short Film" for his work, Rejected.

ELINA BROTHERUS &ndash The Lesson by Elina Brotherus screened at our festival in 2000. Since that time, the artist has become a major success in the contemporary art world and recently graced the cover of the contemporary art magazine Tema Celeste.

RICHARD ANKROM &ndash Guerrilla Public Service was a world premiere at our festival in 2002. Ankrom’s project soon was featured on NBC Nightly News and in People magazine, among many other mediums.

RYAN McFAUL &ndash After the 2003 festival screening of the music video Gay Boyfriend, created by McFaul for the musical ukulele duo Ukes of Hazzard, the band changed their name to The Hazzards, received a record deal with Better the Devil Records in London, and the song became a big pop/dance hit in the UK. The group has been featured on such programs as the BBC's Liquid News, Comedy Central's Out on the Edge and has performed live at such prestigious contemporary art venues as The Knitting Factory in New York.
