This mid-career retrospective surveys work that appropriates historical images to raise questions about the power of the image and the uses to which it may be put to shape national identity and social values. Concentrating on images of epic nationalism and the role that the image of industry played in forging a sense of entitlement to power, Gipe re-inscribes the Romanticism of the Nazi official painting, then of the photography manuals used to ostensibly demonstrate the power of German optics, while the latest group looks at American military advertising images.
