Sara and David Lieberman, with their impeccable eye and passion for contemporary craft, have assembled one of the best collections of contemporary baskets in the country. Approximately 75 works will be on exhibit from the more than 150 works in their collection. The baskets are made from traditional, natural materials as well as commercial and often surprising media. Artists range from the regional to the international, and the collection includes both functional and sculptural forms.
Exhibition, catalog and educational programs are made possible, in part, by Sara and David Lieberman, a grant from the Friends of Fiber Art International, Twin Rocks Trading Post, Barry and Steven Simpson, Bluff, Utah; Tai Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Mobilia Gallery, Boston, Massachusetts; Cervini Haas Gallery/Gallery Materia, Scottsdale, Arizona; Friends of the ASU Art Museum; and Arizona Designer Craftsmen. Organized by the ASU Art Museum and curated by senior curator Heather Sealy Lineberry with Jane Sauer, fiber artist and scholar. A color catalog with essays by Kenneth R. VISITING ARTIST PROGRAMS
DEMONSTRATION - Saturday, Jan. 21, 2-4 p.m.
Lisa Telford , a Git'ans Git'anee Haida weaver, demonstrates cedar weaving and twining techniques. Telford comes from a long line of weavers. She harvests and prepares her own materials, using red and yellow cedar bark and spruce root. Her award-winning work in both contemporary and traditional weaving includes twined and plaited baskets, traditional hats and cedar bark clothing.
LECTURE AND DEMONSTRATION - Tuesday, Feb. 7, 6 p.m.
Since the early 1970s, Dorothy Gill Barnes has been known for vessels and objects constructed with materials harvested from nature. The evening begins with a lecture on her work, which blends traditional weaving techniques with experimentation. At 7 p.m., Barnes shares materials that she has gathered during her visit to Tempe and talks about the opportunities and designs they suggest. She will also share her miniatures, small works demonstrating her philosophy and use of materials. Co-sponsored by Arizona Designer Craftsmen.
LECTURE AND GALLERY TALK - Friday, Mar. 24, noon
Carol Eckert shares her containers and staffs that are inspired by world myths, legends and spiritual traditions. She uses the ancient technique of coiling to create her cast of recurring animals to tell stories. Eckert shows slides of her whimsical pieces; talks about her two works in the exhibition; and shares her process by showing works in progress.
