Location: South Entrance Gate to Museum StoreIrritated by a newspaper article on capitalist exploitation in developing countries and efforts to "seize an opportunity" while simultaneously rejecting the original identity and worth of these countries, Julia Alexander created Made in India. In a series of thirty-six personalized coffee cups and two murals installed at the south entrance of the museum store, Alexander attempts to raise awareness and stimulate dialogue about efforts of multinational businesses to project American values onto others around the world. Though the artist feels that this pressing issue is not one for which she has a particular solution, she does make it clear that it is a problem that must be addressed before globalization through mass marketing causes the loss of age-old cultural identities.
Julia Alexander received a BFA in Intermedia from Arizona State University. She is currently a MFA candidate at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA, where she recently relocated. Her work has been included in the exhibitions: Summer, Rick Gayle Studio, Phoenix, AZ; Car, Modified, Phoenix, AZ; Woods, Step Gallery, Tempe, AZ; The 110+(Plus) Show, 828 Space, Phoenix, AZ; Paper or Plastic, PEBE, Tempe, AZ; Fiber Reactions, Step Gallery, Tempe, AZ; Juried Undergradute Exhibition, Harry Wood Gallery, Tempe, AZ; and House of Da-fir-ent, Modified, Tempe, AZ.
