Rhapsody: Selections from Valley Collections
This exhibition will highlight the exceptional work, found here in the Valley, by some of the more renowned African-American artists. Most are contemporary artists such as Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker and Radcliffe Bailey. But there is also work by their predecessors, artists that broke barriers and influenced this new generation, such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Faith Ringgold. Rhapsody continues the museum’s dialogue on work by African-American artists begun with the museum’s exhibition Face Off: Jean-Michel Basquiat and Michael Ray Charles and its collaboration with the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art programs for Looking Forward Looking Black.

Rhapsody includes works by Emma Amos, Benny Andrews, Radcliffe Bailey, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, Michael Ray Charles, Robert Colescott, Renée Cox, Charles Gaines, Sam Gilliam, Eugene Grigsby, Artis Lane, Jacob Lawrence, Stephen Marc, Kerry James Marshall, Richard Mayhew, Beverly McIver, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Lezley Saar, Charles Sebree, Lorna Simpson, Therman Statom, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, Charles White, Hale Woodruff and Rip Woods.
ASU Art Museum Presentation
Organized by Jean Makin, ASU Art Museum, Beverly McIver, ASU School of Art, Stephen Marc, ASU School of Art, and Kim Curry-Evans, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Rhapsody will be installed in the Top Gallery of the Arizona State University Art Museum’s Nelson Fine Arts Center location.
Duration
Rhapsody (February 10 - May 13, 2001) is open Tuesday from 10am to 5pm, Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.
