Students
Social Studies
Social Studies is a dynamic program that attempts to open the creative process, by making the "human factor" relevant beyond didactic labels and documentation, and creating actual relationships through artistic practice. Artists are given a complete gallery space for his/her workshop/studio/lab and invite other artists, students, faculty and community members to collaborate. Students from all disciplines are invited to query and interact with the artist during his/her residency.

Social Studies 4: Paulo Nenflidio – Feb. 17 - March 27, 2009
For the Social Studies 4 residency, the ASU Art Museum will host Paulo Nenflidio for six weeks. Born in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) in 1976, Nenflidio is a sound artist who also works in sculpture and drawing. Nenflidio is known for his musical sculptures that hybridize traditional Brazilian instruments with electronic technology. These instruments artistically combine tradition, innovation and a playful interactive element. Many of them emit different sounds either autonomously or stimulated by changes of light, the wind or spectator interaction. View an impressive video library of Nenflidio's work.
For Social Studies 4, Nenflidio will modify donated instruments in collaboration with community school groups, university faculty, students, and museum visitors to design experimental music and sculpture. The residency will culminate with a performance utilizing the redesigned instruments. Performance design, performers and location will be determined as part of his residency.
We invite you to join Paulo Nenflidio in the museum.
Social Studies 4: Paulo Nenflidio is supported by Future Arts Research at ASU and the National Endowment for the Arts. Campus partners include the ASU School of Art Intermedia program and Brazilian partners include A Gentil Carioca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
