A cultural exchange program between the cities of Phoenix, Arizona and Guadalajara, Jalisco.
GDL>PHX is a new initiative to bolster the relationship between the art scene in Guadalajara, Jalisco and Phoenix, Arizona. Both cities are sometimes ignored in favor of their larger metropolitan counterparts, Mexico City and Los Angeles, respectively — yet today, both Guadalajara and Phoenix boast thriving arts and culture scenes that are garnering international attention. Guadalajara has a centuries-old history in the arts, particularly crafts and architecture, and contemporary artists have found it a vibrant context to make new art. Phoenix’s landscape, cultural diversity and history also provide a rich context for new work.
This initiative is a partnership between ASU Art Museum, CALA Alliance and Programa Anual de Open Studios (PAOS GDL).
The first program in the larger GDL>PHX initiative is GDL>PHX Residencias Artísticas, an artist residency and cultural exchange program between the cities of Phoenix, Arizona and Guadalajara, Jalisco. The program offers fully sponsored residencies to artists from Guadalajara to travel and work in Phoenix, Arizona and Latinx artists from Phoenix to travel and work in Guadalajara, Jalisco. The first two artists selected for the exchange were Gabriel Rico and Estrella Payton.
